You thought Baby Groot was a stone-cold scene thief?Ashley Lopez Archives Just wait.
There's so much to unpack from a second viewing of the Avengers: Infinity Warfootage that first played at D23 last and came out for an encore at Comic-Con on Saturday night, but there was one thing I utterly missed the first time that fully stood out the second:
Teen Groot.
We first met the brooding, game-obsessed teenaged Groot in one of the post-credits scenes from Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, when Peter Quill was giving him a fatherly talking-to, and he wan't having any of it. Well, he's barely aged at all by the time we get to Infinity War-- and so settled into the background that I didn't see him the first time around.
But when you lock on him, I promise you won't be able to take your eyes off.
SEE ALSO: 'Black Panther' just debuted some new footage at Comic-Con and it looks friggin' epicAs we told you before, the Infinity Warfootage starts off aboard the Milano, where the Guardians are rolling up on some major space-based destruction. All of the Guardians -- yes, newbies Nebula and Mantis, too -- are gathered on the bridge.
"All right Guardians, this could get dangerous so put your mean faces on," says Star-Lord.
To his right, tucked into one of the Milano's exquisite bucket seats, sits Teen Groot, barely visible in the wonderfully candy-colored clutter of the shot. He is thumbing the hell out of a handheld game device. And at the mere sound of Star-Lord's voice, he rolls his eyes.
Something thunks hard on the windshield -- it's Thor! -- and he's unconscious.
Even as the Guardians bring the Thunder God aboard the Milano and drop him onto the floor, Teen Groot is banging away on that game. He truly cannot be bothered with all this grown-up nonsense, god it's so BORING.
Mantis wakes Thor, who groggily comes to. And he is grouchy.
He turns on his heel, menacing his new captors, and growls: "Who the hell are you guys?"
Now he's got the Guardians to put on those mean faces.
Even Teen Groot, who's finally put down the game.
Hey, even teens care when family is threatened.
Groot doesn't appear again in the long run of footage that leads to Thanos throwing a moon down onto his foes. But you can bet he'll be around, and we'll be zooming in.
