Once inside, you'll need to push the "start" button. That prompts a safety check using sensors inside the car. The car will make sure everyone is settled in their seats and doors are closed.

The backseat touchscreens are reminiscent of those in the backseat of Chrysler Pacifica and Jaguar I-Pace robo-taxis from Waymo. Alphabet-owned Waymo built its own ride-hailing app for riders in Phoenix and San Francisco.

Motional anticipates its rides won't need a safety driver in the front seat by the time the EVs are on the road in 2023. Instead, passengers will rely on the Lyft app and backseat screens for a smooth ride.
