Gianforte was charged with misdemeanor assault following the incident. He apologised to Jacobs and the Fox Newscrew who witnessed the incident in an address to supporters in the wake of the win on Thursday night.
"Last night I made a mistake," he told the crowd. "I took an action that I can't take back, and I'm not proud of what happened. I should have not responded in the way that I did, and for that I'm sorry."

"And you're forgiven!" a member of the crowd shouted toward Gianforte, followed by applause.
Gianforte added "he should not have treated the reporter that way," and apologised directly to Jacobs and the people of Montana.
