Husband of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Joachim Sauer, was not present for the dinner.

Bettel is currently the world’s only gay leader since Iceland’s former Prime Minister Johanna Sigurðardóttir and Belgium’s Elio Di Rupo finished their mandates in 2013 and 2015 respectively.
